Photo: When Life Gives You Lemons…

When Life Gives You Lemons...

When life gives you lemons… make lemonade. Shot this at Wal-Mart with my digital compact while looking for groceries. The lemons are very yellow and this probably wouldn’t print well, but it looks nice on the screen.

For editing, I used the Auto Tone function and added a little contrast. Nothing other than that. Editing does not always have to be complicated.

The stickers on the lemons say “Sunkist 4958.” Every fruit has to have a sticker now.

Photo: Apples Baking

Apples Baking

Some apple slices covered in honey baking in the oven. I shot this when I was cooking with friends for the International Food Festival at Daytona State College’s DeLand campus Nov. 2009. I wasn’t there for the festival and we didn’t sell much food, but at least this photo came of it.

The glass on the front of the oven had a speckled pattern which, combined with the heat, makes the inside of the oven foggy.

For editing, I just added contrast and changed the white balance in Adobe Camera Raw before importing into Photoshop. I didn’t do any spot editing. There’s a lot of grain since this was dark and I shot at ISO800, F2.2 with my 50mm lens. Using a flash wasn’t an option at all since that would have bounced off the glass.

Photo: Platonic Orchids

Platonic Orchids

These yellow orchids represent friendship only. I found these in someone’s front yard while going for a walk. I tried taking a picture from a high angle to just show grass in the background, but it wasn’t nearly as pretty as a flower-level shot.

There is a house behind the flowers, but it’s blurred out because I used a large aperture (F2.8). I changed the white balance to be less warm, added brightness, and sharpened on the computer, along with the standard darkening of the corners (vignetting).

Photo: Driving Sunset

By Richard X. Thripp at 2009-10-29T00:01:45Z in Photography, Stock Photos, with these tags: brown, canon rebel xti, city, clouds, dark, driving sunset, ef 50mm 1:1.4, evening, orange, roads, sunsets, yellow, 0 Comments. 107 words.

Driving Sunset

I shot this sunset from the backseat while my friend was driving. This is on West International Speedway Boulevard right near Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, Florida, USA.

On the left is the rear-view mirror and at the bottom you see the windshield wipers. That’s why I’m titling this Driving Sunset.

I cloned out a big electronic sign at the bottom-right. It was the college’s sign, but it was bright blue and annoying. You can still see the clone marks if you brighten the photo considerably, but no one will notice normally.

Photo: Golden Evening

Golden Evening

A beautiful golden sunset right before sundown.

I shot this right down my street. There were power lines blocking the way, so I walked in someone’s yard to cut them out of the shot. Some woman yelled “get off my property” at me as I was shooting this, so I tripped the shutter quickly and then walked off.

I put contrast at +100% in Adobe Camera Raw 5.0 and then used the curves tool to push it even further. Even though I pushed the exposure bias down to -1.33, I think I was in the wrong metering mode so the clouds in the middle are over-exposed: they are at (255,255,255) (8-bit) and there is no detail there. Nothing I can do about that… It’s not a big problem in this photo because you expect the sun to be bright.

I pushed a lot of stuff to black with the curves tool, such as the trees and houses below. They aren’t important… no reason for you to see them.

There is a lot of black and empty space in this image. You can do that. The subject does not have to be big and in the center. In fact, it’s often …

The Homeland

The red Ondura roofing Dad added to our sheds, with our house in the background. We haven’t done any work on the tar and gravel roof. It was installed right before we moved in, 16 years ago (1993-03).

Ondura roofing is widely regarded as biodegradable garbage, but it’s working well for us. Talk to me in ten years. It might disintegrate soon.

The trailer I live in and am typing from now is not visible in this shot. It’s behind the mess of buildings.
