Photo: No Wheeled Boxes

This was a sign at Wal-Mart that apparently means “no trucks,” but I thought it looked funny. The truck on the picture looks more like a box with four wheels. So I’ve decided to title this “No Wheeled Boxes.”

This photo is from 2005, but the source image is dull and ugly. Using the curves tool, I added a lot of contrast, making the sky a bright blue and the colors white, black, and red on the sign very vivid. Then, I selectively desaturated the blue in the sky to prevent color banding when I make prints of this photo. The red will look fine, but blue is a particularly vulnerable color for some reason.

I don’t talk much about this, but it costs me $115 per month to keep this blog and my other sites online. If you could make a donation or make your Amazon.com purchases through my Amazon affiliate link, I will be very appreciative.

Photo: Flag Ln. vs. Par Av.

Flag Ln. vs. Par Av.

Street signs near my house. Not far from Flag Lane and Par Avenue is Golf Avenue. The nearest golf course is a couple miles away, so these names are weird.

Nevertheless these signs are worthy of a picture. I used my umbrella to deflect my camera’s flash, as it would have been too bright otherwise.

Flag Ln. or Par Av. Which one will you choose?

Signs

What happens in Central Park stays in Central Park.

This is on West Granada in Ormond Beach, Florida, on the corner of Orchard St. There is also a sign for Harbor Baptist Church.

I liked this arrangement of signs, and it became better when I switched to black and white in Photoshop. This photo has no meaning, but you can read your own meaning into it.

Clothing Optional

NO this is not a nude beach. It’s supposed to be funny. At least I think it is. I didn’t see any nudity there. :blindfold:

Positively Ormond Beach!

A sign in the park at the base of the Granada Bridge in Ormond Beach Florida, where the ground is being dug up for a park. I thought it was funny.

The New Way to Do Things

Saw this poster for Post-It Super Sticky notes at Office Depot:

Post-It Super Sticky poster

Seems like a reasonable advertisement, tasteful, with examples, etc. But look closer at one of them:

Post-It Super Sticky close-up

“Sherri, Let’s team up for the civics report!” Since when is teaming up allowed? It would make high school and college so much easier for me.

I think this poster represents a general lost of respect for the education system… because it’s generally less deserving of respect. My Dad taught me at home, but if I went to public school I would’ve been home-schooled too. No real learning goes on at school; the teachers just say “go home and learn this.” Also, you’re forced to spend time on a lot of garbage when you should be focusing on just three things: reading, writing, and arithmetic. Everything else will flow from that. And no, arithmetic is NOT mixing numbers and letters. It’s practical stuff.

Photo: Obey the Sign

By Richard X. Thripp at 2008-07-06T15:32:21Z in Photography, Stock Photos, with these tags: b&w, black, canon powershot a620, conceptual, contrast, minimalistic, obey the sign, signs, vignetting, white, 0 Comments. 218 words.

Obey the Sign — drink water if you are here for a physical

This was the sign at the doctor’s office for mandatory physical examinations for Volusia County job applicants, way back when I started working at the library (2006 November). The great thing since I was fired, is that I pee into cups far less often being jobless. If I want to repeat the experience, it will only be out of choice and for fun of some sort.

Anyway, I’m sure there’s a more tactful way to work this sign. Perhaps, “please be prepared to give a urine sample.” That wording is more general-purpose too. A sign like that could be everywhere, because who knows when it will come up (for the national security of course).

This was Obey the Sign 6 back on deviantART. The 5 before it are junk, so this is now the definitive Obey the Sign. This photo’s funny in a sad sort of way… we don’t even treat our dogs like this. The clinician has to keep his ear to the bathroom door, to make sure you’re not substituting someone else’s urine. That’s a problem so often, you know?

This isn’t an image you have to beat to death. I just converted to black and white, added a ton of contrast, and burned in the corners.

Photo: The Rebel

By Richard X. Thripp at 2008-03-04T03:35:23Z in Photography, Portraits, Shop, Stock Photos, with these tags: 4x6-lustre, b&w, black, canon elan iie, cigarettes, contrast, ef 50mm 1:1.4, era 100, film, sarah, signs, white, 5 Comments. 92 words.

The Rebel — a girl smoking in front of a no-smoking sign (shameful!)

Sarah rebels against the no-smoking signs. I posed her for this; she didn’t notice the sign till afterwards. Somehow, we didn’t get in trouble. It was noon-time, but fortunately the light wasn’t too harsh.

This is from 35mm black-and-white film (developed, printed, and digitized). I decided to burn in sign (in Adobe Photoshop); it adds punch. Don’t smoke kids! Cigarettes are too expensive.

Buy a 4*6 copy for $0.95 (USA only). Lustre finish. After adding, go to your shopping cart.

2008-05-22 Update: This is on my new Gawker Artists page! Read more here.
