Leafy Sunset — bright yellow leaves against a serene sunset

Yellow leaves against a blue and pink sky. This is an early piece, re-edited (January 2006). I took generic photos of the sunset, but wanted to experiment with including other elements of nature, which gave way to this. I used the flash to brighten the leaves, which also made the sunset appear darker and more vivid.

I added contrast and moved the colors from orange to pink to make this look good.

The Eerie Sunset — a cold evening sky

When the sun goes down, the monsters come out… This is a creepy looking sunset I saw out front of my house. I helped add to the creepiness with a cool white balance setting and boosting the blue color channel in Photoshop. The grain is there to add character.

Golden Tapestry — a golden sun behind silhouetted branches

A golden sunset behind a mess of tree branches. Took this right across the street of my house. It’s the same location and type of tree as A Morning of Fog, but very different lighting.

Darkening and added contrast give this its feeling, though the original is more technically accurate.

Photo: A Purple Evening

A Purple Evening — barren trees against a darkening purple sky

The sky turned purple in this sunset, so I got this photo of the clouds with some bare trees in front. The clouds were darker above, which you can see at the top of the frame.

I darkened the clouds at the top, shifted the colors to be more purple, and improved the contrast.

Photo: The Black Sunset

The Black Sunset — black clouds crowd out the sun

This dark sunset is from my front yard. The division between light and dark was fascinating, and there were bright red highlights on the clouds, but by the time I’d fetched my camera they’d diminished to this. Still looks good, though.

Photo: Sunset in Motion

Sunset in Motion — a car speeding past a bright-orange sunset

A speeding car is the foreground for a stunning sunset outside my home. I’m breaking some rules here: the horizon is tilted, and the sky is over-exposed, but it’s worth it because this is different and creative. Right?

Editing: burning on the sky and dodging on the car, plus more contrast with the curves tool.

Sunrays — orange sunlight shines through the clouds in this sunset

Beams of sunshine shoot through the clouds in this beautiful scene. I took this in my front yard; it’s nice that there are no houses there to clutter up the picture.

I added contrast and brightened the sunrays to enhance the image.

Photo: Sky of Fire

Sky of Fire — a vivid red sunset

A brilliant red sunset I saw while my chauffeur (a.k.a. Dad) was driving me home from work. I whipped out my Canon Rebel XTi (you should always keep a camera with you for scenes like this) and got this shot. Our windshield is scratched up, so the oncoming car’s headlights appear streaked, but I like the effect.

A beautiful purple sunset from our front yard. I used the kit lens because it’s the closest I have to wide-angle. Enjoy!
