Temperatures are getting colder across the Atlantic seaboard as more ice and snowstorms roll in, yet global warming is trumpeted as the result of man’s greed and avarice. Why then are temperatures getting colder? The sun is a bigger influence on temperature than anything we can do.

Steve, it sounds like you’re having a mid-life crisis… I’ve been following your blog diligently for a year, I’ve read your book, and most of your archives. I started blogging about personal development because of you (my writing is awful though). In this post you talk about decisions you made with your wife, but it sounds like it’s all you. It’s you who wanted to date other women. It’s you who wants to run away from your children. How can you be sure you’re raising your consciousness? You could be regressing.
If you’re going to break up, I suppose you should go all the way. Move six women into those six bedrooms and become one of those David DeAngelo types. Make sure you charge them rent to pay that mortgage + child support. Then in a year you’ll want to be back with Erin and the kids.
I wish you good tidings and I hope you find what you’re looking for.

Wow… sexy. Very good for self portraits. Just watch out for vertical or horizontal distortion, such as pic 2 where you are squished along the x-axis (horizontally). The original image is fine but your theme is not preserving the aspect ratio.
Are you a nursing student at Daytona State College? (Thinking of your comment on my blog.) If you ever have time you should model for me. A lot of other DSC students have.
If I ever need a nurse I’ll call you, hehe.

In reply to this comment, by dazzle415:
Yes,
I’m getting the same thing too,
For instance, I’ve created an ‘Events’ page that is essentially blank. I’m using exec-php within the pages to display specific posts. For some reason I’m getting the Tweet-This underneath the page title as well.
I’ve checked ‘hide tweet this on pages’ but it’s still being inserted.
So you have a custom-coded WordPress loop on that WordPress page using the Exec-PHP plugin? The Tweet This links may appear below the posts in that loop.
For the page itself, Tweet This should never appear on pages if you check “Hide Tweet This on pages” under Settings > Tweet This > Advanced Options.

That’s cool! So I could put a torch to it underwater and it would be fine?
It’s only 500GB though… my photos and edits take up 750GB. I have 5 years of work! They should’ve given you more space.

I loved this post. The people who are really personally developed don’t learn it from books or blogs or even writing. They learn it from experience. That’s the reason I want to stop writing about personal development. I’m 18 and have no experience. I should come back and write about personal development when I’m “a Greg.” Could take 40 years.

I always use my right eye on my DSLR, but half the time I’m using my Canon PowerShot SD790IS which doesn’t even have a viewfinder. But I look at the LCD screen with my right eye.
I guess it’s because I’m right-handed… but 37% of your voters use the left eye! Maybe they have better vision in that eye?

http://www.entrepreneurs-journey.com/1641/how-can-you-make-passive-income-online/
Passive income is great. Fewer people are writing about it now. I can’t believe you didn’t mention Google AdSense. I guess you’re targeting businesses with a product to sell, but AdSense is great for blogs and information websites.
I went to school Thursday (2009-09-24) and found I’d made $10 from AdSense when I got home… without doing any work on my site! That’s the definition of passive income. That was all made through people checking the “Insert Google AdSense ads to support Tweet This” option in my Tweet This plugin for WordPress. Still good though.

http://www.copyblogger.com/handling-criticism/
The nice thing online is you don’t have to worry about getting beaten up. If someone wants a fist-fight with me in real life, I’ll run away… even if I “should” defend my honor… because if I fight I’ll get beaten up because I have no experience fighting. No reason to get beaten up… I’m going to live a long time. I don’t want to lose teeth.
Online, it’s totally different because apart from psychos who want to take disputes to real life, you don’t have to worry. Still, it’s good to maintain manners and courtesy. Often commentators spoiling for a fight will be totally surprised when you don’t give it to them. Also, there is time delay. A few hours after a comment war you may have a totally different perspective based on logic rather than emotion.
I liked the “severely retarded” thing more than the Swiss drunk guy, but you couldn’t use it as your hook because it’s a bad headline. I looked at your post and you were wrong because you grouped idiots with retards. “Idiot” is no longer used for mental retardation… the mentally retarded work as hard or harder than us, but they have problems with their brains that make life harder for them. Not their fault!
Don’t get too caught up in politically correct language… I don’t like “mentally challenged” because it diminishes the severity of the problem. It sounds like it can be overcome, but physiological problems can generally not be overcome.
I hope to read more articles on Copyblogger by you in the future!

Nice portraits! I like the second because you can see her nipples, but the first is better because she has a nice smile. Her facial expression in the second isn’t as good.
I too have been prone to under-exposing a person or object to keep the clouds from clipping. I didn’t do this in 2004-2007… it’s something I started doing in 2008 because I was becoming a “better” photographer. And now I’m undoing that! Let the sky wash out if it isn’t the subject. Great tip.

Good article Charles! Whenever you provide a useful tool, you’ll get lots of links. My home page is PR 4, but the page for Tweet This, my WordPress plugin, is PR 6. So I rank #1 for a Google search for “tweet this” (no quotes). This all builds on itself.
In fact, I need to update Tweet This badly. I’ll be coding again tomorrow finally…

Robert’s explanation of QWERTY keyboards is more plausible. I don’t find the design slowing me down much, though I use an unusual keyboard most of the time (Microsoft Ergonomic 4000).
However, I hear the Dvorak layout (no the home row isn’t DVORAK) is much better once you get used to it. Getting “used” to it takes many years, so almost no one makes the jump. I’ve been typing on a computer since I was 10… which is 8 years. Giving up 8 years experience is a big deal. Usually you should just be conventional.

http://www.delightfulwork.com/true-callings/the-true-calling-connection/
Glad to see you’re looking for grounding. You gotta stay grounded, man. I’ve written several dozen articles (1000s of words each) that aren’t grounded in reality.
There are always practical considerations. No success or failure is of unequaled or eternal magnitude. Most of what you’re doing now is actually quite small and insignificant. Don’t feel bad! I’m doing small stuff too, like posting a photo to my blog every day this month and “teaching” a supplemental “class” at college. If you keep moving with the small stuff, eventually (think years), it will become a movement. Something very big.
Keep working, stay hungry, stay foolish.

http://digital-photography-school.com/8-secrets-of-the-zoom-tool-in-photoshop
Cool advice! I just use the navigator’s zoom buttons, and I drag the red box to move around the image. Sometimes I use the scroll wheel to move up and down.
I tried the “zoom with scroll wheel” option, but it is not implemented nearly as well as PhotoFiltre (I love it there), so I don’t use it.
If I use some of your tips I might save a few minutes in a big editing session. Thanks!

http://digital-photography-school.com/doublemint
I support you all the way with editing; I edit every photo I publish in Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe Camera Raw 5.0. Mostly it’s global editing like curves, contrast, white balance, saturation, blackness levels, adding vignetting, and highlight recovery, but I’ll do some localized dodging, burning, desaturation, and healing too if needed.
However, you’ve gone too far. Your goal is this: non-photographers should not be suspicious of your work. Photographers are always going to look for your edits, but outsiders won’t think about editing—unless it’s plainly obvious your photo has been “Photoshopped.” Here, it’s plainly obvious. Tone it down!
In fact, an easy way to tone down the yellow edit and the lime green edit would be to overlay it on the source image at 50% transparency. Bam, 50% less editing. These photos will be more realistic then.
Check out my portfolio (nature shots) for examples of significantly edited photos that don’t arouse suspicion among non-photographers.
- Richard X. Thripp at 2009-09-26T00:28:50.
That is a great idea! This is something I need to think about for my blog because it’s all over the place… I guess since I’ve been making a goal of posting one photo a day this month (and meeting that goal), that my audience is art-lovers and possibly amateur photographers. I talk a bit about each photo when I post it. A photo-blog.

http://www.ucwebcreations.com/build-online-business-wordpress/
At the end of 2007 I opened my site. I chose WordPress and I’ve been using it ever since. I chose to learn HTML, CSS, PHP, and MySQL on my own at that point, which took many months, but the long-term benefits have been huge. I don’t need a web designed or developer. Not that my site is that flashy.
There are more themes and plugins available now than two years ago, and they are generally of a better quality. The bar has gone up, and the WordPress developers have made plugins and themes easier for the non-techies. You can make a nice WordPress blog with no knowledge of PHP or HTML.
I use to manage static HTML sites; as you’ve found it’s a real pain. While a WordPress site has a higher up-front investment, it pays off once you’ve made a dozen posts or pages.

Hey this is good! I meet people all the time who want to make a website for their business just to put on their business cards. They want to register it, write some pages, upload it, and be done with it. It’s a one-time project for them, not a blog or newsletter. They don’t need WordPress. This is a good guide for those people.

I’ve never smoked and I don’t intend to, but this article makes a lot of sense to me. Some people quit smoking cold turkey, while others have great difficulty, even with the best nicotine patches and 12-step programs in the world. It’s easy to dismiss those people as undisciplined, but for many of them it is extremely difficult to end the addiction, as you have discovered.

http://www.positivityblog.com/index.php/2009/09/16/audrey-hepburns-top-3-words-of-wisdom/
The third point is the most important. Three years ago, I thought that if I just had a new computer and a new camera, I would be a much better photographer and get a lot more done. I had a junky point and shoot camera and my computer was so old, it would take 4 seconds to load a 4MP JPEG. I was taking photos like this.
When I got my new computer and camera in 2006, I didn’t get any better. My work actually got worse! It’s been that way ever since! I’m just now becoming as good with expensive tools as I was with cheap tools. Oh, the irony.
I turned 18 last month, but I didn’t consider it a milestone. Sure, my life is changing and I now live 80 feet from my parents instead of in their house, but nothing big has changed. Change only comes from within.

In reply to this comment, by Phil Lynch:
I agree that point three is the best. I emailed it to a friend because he talks about “there” looking better than “here,” but then you get “there” and it becomes your new “here” really quick.
There’s a saying for that: “the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.” Once you get to the other side of the fence, which is better equipment in this case, you prefer what you were doing before! It’s happened to me. My most popular photos were taken with a cheap junky camera.

Beautiful shots! Don’t forget editing. You need to punch up the contrast and dodge the rainbow in Photoshop. Most rainbows aren’t very impressive without enhancement, even with a polarizing filter.

No contract is worth the paper it’s written on unless you are friends. There are always loopholes. There are people who will blatantly disregard the contract and dare you to do anything about it. Unfortunately, legal battles are too expensive for small stuff. Make connections with people so you don’t have to hire strangers.

The playground obscenity idea is golden. I’ve never seen such a photography opportunity here in Daytona Beach, Florida.
I want to take a photo of raindrops falling with a lightning strike in the background, out of focus. I think I’d be better just Photoshopping it. The opportunity will never come up for real.

http://www.copyblogger.com/grammar-chimpanzee/
“She” is now the universal pronoun? Umm, what? “He” is and always has been the default, going back to the Bible. Using “she” doesn’t do any justice to women nor does it make any sense. When we say “mankind,” we don’t mean just men. We mean men and women. Using the man as the universal gender produces shorter sentences and maintains historical continuity.
Even when the politically correct cover both genders, they say “he or she,” not “she or he.” If they use the latter, it is a gimmick and they do not use it consistently.
I hate when people say “I am going to meet my doctor. I hope they are friendly.” Use “he or she” or don’t be politically correct at all. Don’t use awkward and improper grammar, or we will put you in the chimp category.

This is a solid article with good advice. I would add to points 3 and 4 that you should read your writing aloud or get someone else to read it. Reading your writing in your head is not enough. Mental blocks will cause you to miss many errors.
- Richard X. Thripp at 2009-09-10T18:00:27.
I used to litter my articles with outbound links, including pre-configured Google search queries and links to any sites or bloggers I mentioned. I’d link to Wikipedia whenever I mentioned an obscure or even mundane topic. Now I rarely link out, even when mentioning someone, unless the entire post is about an external site.
I do more internal links now, for posts on my site or my other sites. But I do far fewer links overall, making my posts much easier to read. I no longer feel obligated to explain concepts or words. A year ago, if I was mentioning the opossums in my yard, I’d link to the Wikipedia article on that animal. Now I would include no link. If you want to know about something, look it up yourself. There is no reward for laziness.
Most people link out too much. Make your blog a DESTINATION not a portal.

http://www.ursulacomeau.com/canadian-medicalhealth-care-system/
The real problem is the bureaucracy. We have the worst of both worlds. The government doesn’t pay our medical bills out of our taxes, but we pay extreme costs for all medical services because of government regulation. Doctors have to carry a ridiculous amount of liability insurance. As much as a third of their patient load is taken on only to pay their insurance bills.
If you break a bone, 98% of the time the hospital spends on you is for paperwork. They have to write hundreds of pages about your case which go to different departments, the government, their insurance company, etc. If doctors could enter into private contracts with their patients and the red tape and government fees were removed, healthcare could be affordable for all. We wouldn’t need a lottery scheme to pay for it.
Socialized medicine is far inferior to the free market. People blame capitalism for the high cost of medical services in the U.S.A., but the fact is, we already have a socialist system. Hospitals are in the free market no more than public schools, and our public schools are awful too.
The only way to benefit from this system is to sue a doctor. This is NOT the way it is supposed to be. Full socialization will be even worse. Did you know that Congress is taking millions from Medicare to pay for this new system? My Grandma is losing her medical coverage right now!

I wanted to start writing about my hobbies and I wanted to be heard. Secondarily, I wanted to make a living.
Over a year later, I’ve done all these things, but none of them very well. I’ve written a lot, but not much recently. I get 20,000 visitors per month, but I’m not sure if they’re readers because I get almost no comments. I cleared $118 last month, which is hardly a living.

This chart is great! You should start a self-improvement blog. They’re all the rage now.
I don’t exercise much but I use my mind a lot. Every couple days I’ll stop and play a computer game for an hour. That still requires thought, but it is more restorative than meditation for me. I’ve been doing this for two months.
For physical exertion, I’ve been walking around the neighborhood in the mornings and painting my new office Dad is building. I sleep better when I walk a lot. I’m back in college now and I just walk around meeting people, giving out prints of my photos, and taking pictures of things. It’s interesting and fulfills all four quadrants in your chart.
When I’ve been reading and commenting on blogs or writing an article for a couple of hours, I’ll stop to play a song on the piano. I don’t try to learn new songs in this time. I play an old song I’ve memorized. It requires no thought to play, but it helps my fingers because it’s better than typing.

http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifestyle/birthdays-self-reflection-and-a-better-year-ahead.html
I had my 18th birthday 2 weeks ago. I want to do less reflecting, less meditating, and less questioning. I do not want to come up with new ideas, develop new interests, or start new projects. I want to become scheduled and rigid, rather than being flexible yet never getting anything done.
I’ve been unemployed for over a year. If I had a full-time job, I’m sure I’d be doing exactly the opposite of the above. But I need rigidity to crank out articles, process new artistic photos, report on my local college, get through my Calculus II course I just started, and update programming projects.
Most importantly, I’ve resolved to make better friendships and be more open.
Birthdays are a much better time to make changes than new years because they are personal.

I have a large leftovers text file. Most of it I’ll never use for anything, but once a month I look at it and get some inspiration for an idea I ditched previously.
- Richard X. Thripp at 2009-09-03T13:33:34.
Point 2 is the most important idea on this list. When people get involved in personal development, they get far fewer things done! For the first few months, they do lots of reading. Or in my case, lots of reading AND writing. When you print all the personal development articles I’ve written, it totals over 300 pages.
Reading and writing are just tools to help you clear mental blocks and refine your code and processes. They can’t help you unless you use them. The way to use them is to get things done. Start a project, or better yet, finish that old project. Build an addition onto your house and don’t tell the government. Go to college or do your homework. Don’t just sit there reading personal development books.
- Richard X. Thripp at 2009-09-03T13:25:16.
Ideas are worthless. Only implementations matter. You could create a billion-dollar corporation without ever creating a new product. Just improve the products of others and release them as your own.
The first point is very insulting. Did you ever stop to think that maybe tall people ARE generally smarter, better leaders, and more refined? They get that way because they have a genetic boost in confidence from their height. They develop confidence much easily than short people do. Thus, they become more skillful leaders and they get more things done.
Similarly, attractive people are usually smarter, nicer, and more moral than unattractive people. People who are attractive tend to develop their talents further, develop better personal codes, and see the beauty in others. Ugly people often remain bitter, even though their looks may be out of their hands.
Beautiful women are the ones who denounce abortion, while unattractive women who are overweight are the most rabid supporters of infanticide. 90% of the time, attractive people are more moral.
All stereotypes and social biases have an element of truth. Sometimes, they are a very accurate model of reality. They couldn’t become widespread if they were entirely untrue.

Wow that is awesome. I need to get some food coloring. One time I used leftover ink from spent ink cartridges, but it was really messy. I had ink on my hands for two days.
I don’t get tilting the table and duct-taping the wine glasses, then cropping to remove the duct tape. Why couldn’t you just leave the table flat and turn the camera to the side? Much simpler.

@ Richard X. Thripp: You’re right … but how will you manage to have the “angled” liquid in the glasses ?
@FrancoisM: Oh, that’s true. I wasn’t thinking three-dimensionally. The liquid would be level then and it would be obvious you tilted the camera.
Once again, duct tape is the only way.

You have to take away everything extraneous, leaving only the core ideas. Cliched expressions and fluff language can eat up a lot of the word count.
Length doesn’t matter as long as there is a purpose for it. I’ve written photography and personal development articles up to 4000 words which have been just as popular as my 1000 word posts, because they go into much greater detail and they cover more scenarios than fewer words could.
For me, popular is anything that receives 2 or more comments.

Get her eating apricot kernels and apple seeds every day so the cancer doesn’t come back! That’s what prevents and cures cancer. If she does not change her diet to include foods with vitamin B17 she WILL get cancer again. Your body can only dissolve the cancerous cells that appear from time to time with the vitamin found in wheat grass, dark green leafy vegetables, and the seeds of over 1200 fruits and vegetables, B17. Note that you can go to jail in the U.S. and Australia for even suggesting this without saying “consult your medical professional” and “this does not constitute medical advice.” The medical industry wants us to keep getting cancer because it is a money maker!

Not.
The problem with setting milestones is that they are in the future. If you have something big you want to do, start on it now. Don’t put it off till your birthday or Christmas or the new year. More often then not, milestones do not work.

The beliefs and dispositions of our children are influenced by what we do before they are born and how we raise them afterward. The next generation has the power to go far beyond what we have accomplished, although it is purely magical thinking to expect them to excell always.
When you pray, you’re asking a higher force to help you or someone else. When you meditate, you’re asking yourself to help you or someone else. You aren’t groveling at all. It’s a very different feeling. Constant prayer can make jellyfish out of people.

A lot of people have said this before because it is largely true. We are all connected and our thoughts do influence each other. You have much more power to influence someone being near them than over the Internet. Your influence diminishes over distance, just as the power grid requires boosters because energy is lost when transmitted through miles of lines.

Going up an octave doubles the harmonic frequency of a note. This is why the top C sounds so much higher than the C an octave down on the piano. It is much higher.
I believe personal growth mirrors music. You make quantum leaps as you improve yourself, and that’s like jumping up an octave. Self improvement is multiplication, not addition.

What you’re saying is that you empathize with others well. When you become good at this, you’ll get people revealing life secrets after just a few minutes of soul sharing (talking).
You can help a lot of people if you are good at empathizing and removing unproductive beliefs from others. First you have to empathize with and refine yourself.

This is why you should unplug from technology occasionally and go for a walk in the woods, the park, or just around the neighborhood. I do this a few mornings a week.
ALSO, it’s good to focus on one thing at a time rather than multi-tasking. Spend eight hours on an essay and get it done NOW, rather than spreading it over days and finishing it at the last minute. When you switch between tasks, you disrupt your rhythm, wasting a lot of time.
I wrote a little more about this in my blog post, Don’t Multitask.

Experience is the most important life accomplishment. A college education provides some, but not as much as working in the field you love. Writing provides some, but not as much as doing. I don’t have much experience.
At the same time that you must try many different hobbies, travel across the world, and meet many people, you must pick your primary field and work on it passionately. Become an expert in something. Don’t dabble in everything.

The courses I’m taking are hard sciences like calculus and physics, so the rigidity is okay. I was in Daytona State’s QUANTA program which is exceptionally open-minded and is nationally renowned. I consider my college experience a blessing, but what many people are going through is a curse.

It also makes a lot of money. 15 million children are on psycho-tropic drugs. What will happen to these children in their forties? We don’t know. It can’t be good.
Note that these children have no deficit of attention in the fields they love, be it their favorite video game, computer programming, art, or MySpace. They can focus much better than others can in these areas, sometimes for hours on end. But if they can’t focus in school, they are labeled and drugged.
How did ADD become a disease? A show of hands by a bunch of psychologists. The condition has no physiological basis so it should not be treated with physiological methods (drugs). It is purely psychology, so counseling or special, more exciting education is the answer.

Who knows what’s in Windows? Microsoft doesn’t release the source code. They probably help the government spy on us. The code may be at a low level which is not even detected by antivirus software, or Microsoft and the government may have agreements with the makers of antivirus software.
Computers and popular computer programs are so complicated that even computer experts never understand them. You need a holistic view to understand a computer, but it takes so long to develop. One of the possibilities with LSD is that your mind is making up stuff. It may have no basis in reality. You probably are not really time traveling.
Did you know that Cary Grant, a famous actor, took 100 LSD trips? That was before it was made illegal.
Time travel is interesting. The house you live in now may have been a battleground at one time, an ocean at another, a swamp 500 years ago, and the birthplace of life billions of years ago. You never know.
In 1915, 845 died when a ship called the Eastland fell on its side in port on the Chicago river. A temporary morgue was set up where the bodies were burned. That morgue is now the site of Oprah’s Harpo Studios, and the place is haunted to this day by those dead people. Voices, stuff moving around, sounds of footsteps, you name it. You could call that an example of time travel or at least, departed spirits impacting the present.

http://redsolarmoon.wordpress.com/2009/03/11/time-travel-dream-creators/
The first episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was interesting because Captain Sisko encounters an alien entity who exists in all times. He has to explain the concept of linear time to the alien, and the alien has access to all his memories and recreates them so Sisko can explain them. In an unpleasant memory about his wife dying, he says “this time has already passed.” The alien says, “then why do you exist here?”
The alien concludes that we do not live in linear time.
It’s true. While you are mainly in the present moment, if you are well practiced you can influence the past and the future with your thoughts. You can also influence how others perceive you without being in their presence.

http://redsolarmoon.wordpress.com/2009/03/08/collective-unconscous/
You need to spell-check your articles. It’s “Unconscious,” not “Unconscous.”
It’s the same thing with our U.S. dollars. They are based on public “confidence.” If everyone at once decides not to accept them, the currency falls. It does not have intrinsic value.
People pick up beliefs from friends, strangers, and the press, and they hold on to them for life, even if they are revoked later. If the news reports you were arrested for shoplifting, and then three hours later a retraction is issued, no one will remember the retraction.
Remember that the U.S. media is heavily influenced by the government. Bob Opsahl is gleeful when the government installs more cameras or finds more efficient ways to track our phone calls and emails. It’s always for our “safety.” The American public swallows it hook, line, and sinker.

The world has changed a lot, but if you come across as a friendly person, strike up conversation with people, listen to them, and are interesting yourself, you can cut through the social shields. This is fine for informal blogging but it won’t work for scholarly research. You can’t make unverified claims there without qualifying them. Unless you’re 100% sure you must use “may,” “almost,” “generally,” etc.
The same holds true for high school and college essays.
Most of us aren’t writing those, but you have to use a separate mode for blogging than you do for formal writing.
Richard X. Thripp at 2009-09-01T16:34:57.http://www.copyblogger.com/vampire-words/
In reply to this comment, by Brian Clark:
Richard, no such qualification for scholarly writing is necessary, because that’s not what this blog is about.
@Brian Clark: No, it says “Writing” not “Blogging” in the title. Many of us have to write essays for college still, or for our jobs, where making claims that are false will not fly. A large portion of copywriting is for sales or advertising. There are laws about truth in advertising—you can’t make statements that are clearly false. This post is bad advice for a lot of writers.
“7 Reasons Why List Posts Will Always Work” and “Why You Can’t Make Money Blogging” are completely falsifiable. I could easily find a list post that has received no traffic or a blog that makes thousands of dollars per month. It would be completely unacceptable to market a cell phone with the headline “The Cell Phone that Always Works.” If you want to talk about writing copy, you have to talk about advertising and press releases.
This post requires a codicil stating that it only applies to blogging and informal writing.

Richard, with all due respect, what part of “Copyblogger” or “Copywriting tips for online marketing success” indicates we tackle so-called “scholarly writing?” Do you honestly mean to tell me you don’t look at the context of the publication you’re reading for semantic cues?
And please don’t show up here and tell me “what I have to do.” I’ve been doing just fine without your esteemed input.
@Brian Clark: If you would have read my comment instead of just making assumptions, you would’ve seen that most of it was about press releases and advertising (”writing copy”). Obviously, a major part of this blog is about writing advertising, and advertising cannot make false claims. You read the my first sentence and my last sentence. Please read the whole comment before responding.
You don’t want me to tell you what to do? Did you want me to prefix it with “please” or “I think”? You encourage boldness in most of your articles. Why do you expect your commentators to be timid sycophants?

“Oh honey, mom and dad aren’t gonna die for a long, long, long, long time. And by then you’ll have so many friends that you won’t even care.”
I haven’t raised a kid but I wouldn’t say that. He’s going to care when his parents die no matter how many friends he has. Don’t make him think otherwise, even at 4.
Maybe it would be better to tell him that he’ll be very sad, but stronger and able to take care of himself then.

http://mt4.radified.com/2009/08/difficult-to-befriend-an-attacker.html
I don’t get this either. My mother did the same thing to my Dad. Multiple false release reports filed against him. He found out about it first and pre-empted it with his own police report, so the reports ended up canceling each other out, as they both accused the other person of the same thing (violence).
My mother left Florida when I was six and my Dad raised me all my life. I turned 18 this month. So it’s been a while. She came back when I was 8 to try to win custody. This was after being in California for two years. She requested back child support for the time she was totally out of my life. I don’t understand how that works. She ended up getting joint custody (three months per year) and having to pay about $450 per month child support, whereas my Dad begged her not to go to court (all the wasted money and stress) and was happy to accept no child support (he didn’t even consider it). I never went to CA and she never pushed it, and she still lives out there with her husband of nine years and her eight year old daughter I’ve met twice.
What amazed my father was the incompetence of her lawyer. Everyone in the courtroom was poorly spoken. It’s not like Perry Mason at all.
I never understood her hatred toward my father, or her insistence on going to court. She just finished paying $50,000 in child support over a period of ten years. I have to say, she’s a much better person now. She became a Christian.
My advice to you is to remember that all people can change. Your boy’s mom will change. She’ll have to do it on her own, and it might take ten years, but she will. She’s just at a very immature stage right now.
I see she got your license suspended. It’s a pity that the courts are so biased toward women. If my father hadn’t been the ideal Dad and my Mom didn’t handle the situation so badly, he wouldn’t have gotten primary custody, just because the courts are so biased. They grilled him on the stand for four hours, even bringing up the crimes of his siblings and the fact that he put grease on our fence to discourage her from climbing over it. Mom broke down crying after 15 minutes and basically said nothing.
People who find this post through Google and have not been in your situation will think that there must be more than you are revealing. You must have battered her for years. They can’t believe that someone (especially a woman) could be hateful and evil without reason. It happens. I’ve followed your posts for over a year and I know you’re a great father and probably treated her like a queen. Sometimes all you get is resentment for it.

I don’t watch news on t.v. or read the paper, because that’s all government propaganda. Police brutality, more intrusive government, fewer rights, and more fiat money is always supported on the nightly news.
The sky is falling on the economy. That’s a fact. Obama’s administration is raiding the treasury like it’s never been raided before. In five years, dollars may be blowing in the streets. They’ll be worthless.
In this area the press is overly optimistic. The economy can’t recover without sound currency.
“499,997 people were NOT murdered” is NOT NEWS. It’s not newsworthy. A murder taking place or a murder being stopped in progress is newsworthy. The status quo is not.
If you want human interest stories, watch Oprah. The news is not too negative. But it is heavily slanted toward fascism.

Don’t forget caching. WP Super Cache is the best. I don’t have caching since my server is over-powered, but I’ll have to re-add it later.
Some things don’t work with WP Super Cache, like many poll plugins, post rating, the Seth Godin plugin that shows dynamic text based on referrer. It’s a compromise.
An interesting supplemental backup is the LiveJournal CrossPoster plugin. It’s very good and I never have to deal with it. Whenever I publish a post it’s published to my LiveJournal. When I edit or delete it, the changes are mirrored. So if I’ve forgotten to backup my database and my site goes down… I still have everything I’ve written.
Another thing you must do is replace your RSS feed with Feedburner. I know you’re handing your feed off to someone else, but they’re really good and it will take a lot of load off your site. Then, use their email subscriptions feature to let your readers subscribe by email. Sign up yourself so you get a backup of your blog posts each day in your inbox.

Your blog only dies in the first three months if it is uninteresting to you, because then you stop writing. My blog did that recently. Your main problem is not keeping your audience interested. It is keeping yourself interested. The blog marches on if you keep writing, regardless of your audience.
Don’t worry about making your blog interesting or helpful to others. Only concern yourself with making it interesting and helpful to yourself. If it accomplishes that, it will be more relevant to the public than anything targeted at them. Unless you are a very boring person.

http://www.antharjalaya.com/make-money-with-pay-per-click-advertising/
Mix up your ad layouts too. Trial each one for a week if you make less than $5 a day, or three days if otherwise. You need real data to make decisions, but when in doubt, a 300×250 ad floated to the top-left of the first post on each page is good. Some sites work better with less or more intrusive ads.
I use Google AdSense for almost all of my income. I don’t target traffic or consider profitable keywords. I don’t pay attention to search engine optimization, but I am making my titles and openings to my articles increasingly relevant rather than witty.

Nice list. The only one I use is WP-Polls, but I may consider the Seth Godin plugin which displays messages to visitors from specific social media sites and search engines. Very handy. I don’t need to use WP-Cache on my fancy high-powered host, so that opens up the option.
If you’re using WP-Cache or the better WP Super Cache which produces completely static HTML files, many of these options are simply not available to you.

I’m a photographer, but I write most of my articles with no images whatsoever!
I’m not sure how well that works. On the one hand, most of my articles don’t need images. It would be hard to find a good image to match the content, even in my library. On the other hand, adding an image, even if it is not completely relevant, may get me more readers and traffic.

Those are some good designs. I like your blog the most. Great theme and color scheme.
I tried opening six tabs to all the sites by middle clicking on all the “Visit site” links, but all I got were six copies of your portfolio page! The only way to use those links is to left click and view the site in the same window. Bad usability. That might be the fault of the gallery plugin you’re using.

http://www.ucwebcreations.com/10-blog-traffic-tips/
The eleventh tip: after you have a dozen pillar articles, start linking to them where relevant in your new posts. People start reading a Wikipedia entry and end up spending three hours there, not because of the entry itself, but because of the inline links to other entries. You want to do the same thing with your blog. Your blog should be a marching wiki. It marches because you don’t revise old articles, and it is a wiki because new articles link back to old articles.

In reply to this comment, by Ursula:
Excellent tip – I completely agree! I’ll have to look at how to implement that myself!
First implement yourself some threaded comments!
Anyway, it’s easy. Just link to old posts with a href tags in new posts.
While you’re at it, get rid of the Captcha and filter spam with Akismet. I’ve gotten 53,000 spam comments on my blog, all stopped by Akismet. If I used a Captcha, it would be more like 500, but many people wouldn’t bother to post a legit comment.

I’ve tried to set up threaded comments but either my theme doesn’t like it or isn’t “prepped” for it… (and that’s more coding than I know how to do)…
I use Akismet as well, but I also use Captcha because I was getting tired of maintaining the spam comments I was getting (checking them to ensure they really were spam, deleting them, etc.), so I added the Captcha.
I don’t even bother checking the spam comments. I hope nothing good gets lost. But I’d prefer losing a couple good comments a month to having 25% fewer comments overall. I bet that’s what you lose with the Captcha.

My blog is my soapbox. I post all my formal articles and developed ideas there, while using my Twitter page for short things, new, undeveloped ideas, and networking.
My blog also doubles as a photography gallery. You can do so much with WordPress and community plugins. My whole website is WordPress.
Blogs are better than static websites because they can be updated easily and they follow reverse chronological order. Commenting is the other big benefit. It would be very hard to re-implement my blog with PHP, MySQL, and HTML. WordPress makes it easy.

Nice list. I only use 3 of those methods: Google AdSense, Amazon Associates, and donations. In the whole life of my blog I’ve received two $30 donations, but AdSense is pulling in over $100 per month now. Amazon, under $10. I’ve been averaging $0.28 per click this month: 602 clicks, $166.24 total. You can always make it up on volume.
I should look into Chitika because it is very successful for some people. Almost every blog makes its money from AdSense.

http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifestyle/7-steps-to-start-lucid-dreaming.html
At the start of the year I was questioning reality constantly, so I had many lucid dreams. It became a force of habit: in my dream world I would try pinching myself or reading signs to see if everything acted the same as in the real world. If the result was false, I would then be dreaming lucidly.
Up until I moved into a travel trailer in the back of my parents’ yard last month, most of my dreams, lucid or not, would begin with me waking up in my bedroom, putting on my jeans, and walking around the house. Often my Dad would be on the computer just as he is in real life and I’d tell him I’m going for a walk. Then I might go outside, where my yard looked almost the same as in real life. The houses close by looked the same, but when I’d walk down the street, everything would be different. I suppose that is because those locations are less ingrained in my consciousness.
Now, my dreams are all over the place. Different locations, unknown locations, different people. I haven’t had a lucid dream in a month, and it was in my house again. I couldn’t control the environment which was very disconcerting. Toward the end of my previous lucid dreaming period, I could float through the air. It is a nice sensation which feels different from swimming. I also didn’t have to get dressed, because I could just snap my fingers, blink my eyes, and intend it with my thoughts. Then I would be wearing good clothes. That isn’t working for me now.
Whenever a lucid dream starts ending, I get tunnel vision and my hearing fades away, just as it does when I’m falling asleep. If I want to prolong the dream, I start spinning in circles like a little kid while touching my tongue to the roof of my mouth. Always works, though I can’t prolong my stay in the virtual reality for more than a few minutes.
Sometimes after the dream ends and I awaken, I keep my eyes closed and don’t move a muscle. I feel my eyeballs continuing to vibrate and I’m over-heated, as if my body can’t regulate it’s temperature. Am I still in REM mode? Once, I went back into a lucid dream, but normally it just ends after a few minutes of being still, and I get up.

That woman’s case is interesting because you can’t blame the Turning Point course because her death was her fault. I bet she was a habitual over-thinker who became unable to sleep for many days during and after the course because she kept thinking over the material. Ultimately she came to the conclusion that life is pointless, which is very easy to do under sleep psychosis. That’s why she killed herself. A psychotic state… no drugs needed.
It was definitely not the quest for more success… that never causes you to kill yourself.

Though it has been demonized and made illegal by the government, marijuana is actually good for you when eaten. Smoking is awfully bad because of the quick absorption and damage to your lungs, though.
Anyway, a big mistake like that does cause radical changes in your life. If he never got into an accident, he wouldn’t have improved as a person. Despite that he cannot get a job now, hurt someone else, and made enemies for life, it was a net gain for him and for the world.

Six months ago, I added a checkbox titled “Insert Google AdSense ads to support Tweet This” to my Tweet This plugin. Checking it adds a banner AdSense ad to your footer and a box one on single post views below the text of the post. I don’t know who is supporting me, but I have earned $300 from the feature so far and Google has upheld all the earnings as valid.
This is risky because you are responsible for the content of the webpages where your ads appear. However it has been worth it to me, and it will continue to be worth it as long as the checks keep coming. I’m making about $2 an hour for programming work on my plugin now.

This is good news. Sorry I was so nasty about your reversal before. Everyone makes mistakes, as I did.
I wrote a blog post called Egregious Failures, where I included the scathing comment I gave you, and cited it as an egregious failure on my part. If you read it, you’ll realize I’m a hypocrite, because my URL shortening service Th8.us had a three day outage one month before. My service receives 1/1000 of the visitors that tr.im gets, but on principle my comment was wrong. Unlike my service, your service did not go offline at all. You just made an announcement which made people angry. TinyURL and Twitter have had major outages in the past few months. Your mistake was insignificant in comparison. If I did not read your blog or check your home page when you had the announcement up, I would not even know about it now.
Do you know what Twitter should do? Ditch all URL shorteners and just flag all URLs as 25 characters toward the 140, regardless of length. Problem solved.
Sorry and good luck,

http://digital-photography-school.com/contact-digital-photography-school
Hey Darren,
You have those social networking links at the top of each post, but you aren’t sending titles to Digg or Twitter and you aren’t shortening URLs for Twitter. If you do those three things I bet you’ll get 20% more social media linking (mainly Twitter) which will increase your site traffic by 2%.
Also you are not URL encoding your titles or escaping your ampersands. You are using XHTML strict… if you weren’t sending it with the content-type text/html, a proper browser would refuse to load your pages!
I modified your code to fix these issues. You can paste it over the social links part in your theme if you want to use it, provided that section is within the loop.
http://richardxthripp.thripp.com/files/misc/dps-social-20090825.txt
I tested it to be sure it works. All it does is change your links. The short URLs are on your domain using a built-in WP feature. Some people find my coding style alarming because I enforce the 80 character rule and do not jump in and out of PHP… but it works and I like it.
Hope I’ve helped,
Richard - Richard X. Thripp at 2009-08-25T09:19:34.
http://digital-photography-school.com/one-large-memory-card-or-multiple-small-cards
Wow people are still talking about this? I thought this discussion ended in 2004.
Like everyone before you, you have it wrong, Peter. The biggest benefit to a single is RELIABILITY. You lose data when you EJECT the card and damage the connectors. You do not swap cards with one large card. If you use the USB cable exclusively, you never have to remove it from the camera. The card is much less likely to fail. You aren’t going to drop it in the dirt, get it wet, or misplace it either.
Non-intuitively, the biggest benefit of small cards is lending. That’s it. But you don’t need a bunch of small cards for that. Just carry one big card and one small card for lending. The small card doubles as a backup option if your big card fails. Then you can still take photos. Putting your eggs in one basket, however, is not an issue with a big card. With five cards, you are at least ten times more likely to have a failure than with one large card (higher chance due to card swaps). Would you like to lose one-fifth of ten photo-shoots or all of one photo-shoot? I’d take the latter any day. Even if I was a professional.
I use one 16GB CF card in my Canon Rebel XTi. I don’t carry an extra card. Never had a problem… I’ve had it for a year and have only put 1200 photos on it (12GB). I download them to my computer and then leave them on the card.
I also have a two 2GB cards, six 1GB cards, and a 512MB card. They’ve been sitting on a shelf for a year.
The second biggest problem with multiple small cards is swapping. You will always miss the best shots while you are changing memory cards… it just happens that way.
I blogged this 1.5 years ago, though it’s a weak post… No Safety in Multiple Memory Cards.

I can’t believe you wrote a lengthy codicil and introductory disclaimer here. This is not at all a controversial post. It’s not a rant either. It isn’t even challenging. It’s obvious. Don’t turn into a wimp. Ditch the disclaimers. I know the Australian government is Draconian on medical advice, but this is not at all a post that needs disclaimers.
Half the world is starving. The other half is struggling with an over-abundance of food. It’s a sad situation.
As you can tell from my Gravatar I need to lose 30 pounds, but I haven’t made an effort. I’m starving right now though. When you’re starving, you’re losing weight. Your body is very upset with you because you are forcing it to burn its fat stores. That is a good thing.
Aliens must think fatness is a genetic trait specific to certain regions of the Earth. Well, the really dumb aliens anyway. Fat parents always have fat children, but it’s not genetics. They eat too much and they feed their kids too much.
Remember also that two scoops of fat free ice cream is worse than one scoop of regular ice cream. At least when you eat the regular ice cream your appetite becomes diminished. With low calorie foods, you just eat more. Reduce the QUANTITY of your food.

Email to api@twitter.com, subject: Basic Authentication Source Parameter Request
Hi,
Today I released Tweet This 1.6, a free WordPress plugin for Twitter. This new version can auto-tweet new blog posts to Twitter. I chose Basic Auth over OAuth because it’s easier for the user. The user can set his Twitter username and password and test the login without leaving his WordPress blog. The security advantages of OAuth are small because no third parties are involved—the username and password are stored in the user’s WordPress database. Tweets can be posted as a post is published or when it is scheduled to be published, and future versions will allow background archival of tweets and scheduled tweeting, all of which will be easier to implement with basic auth and the username and password available to the plugin.
This is also how the popular Twitter plugin “Twitter Tools” works. Even though a new version was released this month, it still uses basic auth because it works better for these purposes.
I am requesting a source parameter for this reason, even though they are no longer provided. It said you could do this here, and although I don’t expect to get one it would be a big boost to my program.
I would prefer the source parameter “tweetthis” if it is available, because it is already in place in v1.6 of my plugin so it would start working immediately. If not, a different source parameter is fine.
This will allow tweets made through the plugin to display “from Tweet This.” Right now they display “from web.”
Tweet This is in use on over 5000 blogs and has been downloaded over 50,000 times. Notable bloggers using it are Darren Rowse and John Chow. It has been described as “wicked awesome.”
Thank you for considering my request.
Richard

I’m working on a plugin that runs a function when a post is published with this code:
add_action(’publish_post’, ‘tt_auto_tweet’, 99);
How can I display a message below the yellow “Post published” text after this action is run?
I see in /wp-admin/edit-form-advanced.php the code that prints anything sent through an HTTP GET request: if (isset($_GET['message'])). I need to know how to go about sending this request on the page shown after a post is published.

Good battlefield metaphors, but you need more of them! Last heading should be “When to Retreat.”
If you’re new to blogging, don’t pay for advertising. Get it for free. There are many ways to do this: email people, comment on other blogs, mutual linking, hand out fliers you print cheaply, word of mouth. The only money you should be paying is your hosting and domain fees. Make money through AdSense and Amazon Associates. Everyone else is doing it, but it’s tried and true.

I’m trying to insert a text box before the title of the first post on the blog using a plugin. Because this is a publicly released plugin (Tweet This), editing the theme is not an option.
There seems to be no way to do this. The filter, the_title, is unacceptable because the title is within a link. I’m using the_content now, but it can’t do what I want. The best it can do is put the text box below the title and post date.
Here is a picture of what I want to do:
http://richardxthripp.thripp.com/files/plugins/tweet-this/dev/tt-v1-6-text-box.pngIf I wanted to insert the text box into the footer, I’d just use add_action(’wp_footer’, my_function). But there is no wp_header function.

https://survey.googleratings.com/ [Google AdSense Support Survey]
AdSense has bad customer service. I didn’t receive a check for June so I requested it be reissued. This is easy to do, but there is no way to leave a comment or explanation. I left the check number field blank as all AdSense gives is the “payment number,” but apparently that is the check number. Then I got a response saying they couldn’t find the payment I requested to be stopped, and I’d have to resubmit with the check number. They couldn’t find it because they didn’t look. All I have to do is click My Account > Payment History to see it, and I gave them the date and amount.
If it is a security issue, meaning that you have to give the check number to confirm you have access to the AdSense account, why not just say it? Also, “check number” and “payment number” should not be used interchangeably.

I gave up on automatic updating a long time ago because WordPress could never log into my FTP account. I tried it again after reading your post using a non-root account, and it was successful. However, I got the same error messages you did when trying to upgrade from Tweet This 1.5.2 to 1.5.3, and it didn’t work on the third try either. I had to wait five minutes before the error message would show up each time I tried upgrading.
I have no idea how the auto-upgrade works or what is causing this. I’ll do some research on it tomorrow, and I’ll try using FTP instead of FTPS. If anyone else can shed some light on this, please post.

http://blog.tr.im/post/160697842/tr-im-resurrected
What is this bullshit? What kind of fools do you take us for, anyway? How dare you pull this shit?
First, you make a whiny announcement about how there’s no point continuing tr.im with no way to make money and no support from Twitter. Then, you announce that you’ll be breaking millions of links at the end of the year by turning off the tr.im servers. Finally, you tell us it was all a joke.
That’s what this is, anyway. A joke. An insult to your users. Do you get some sort of sadist thrill out of pulling these stunts? You obviously had no intention of ending tr.im. This was just a publicity stunt. A very bad one at that, because it alienates your users. How can anyone take you seriously again?
Until recently, Twitter favored TinyURL. Why weren’t you squawking then? Twitter shows disfavor to you now no more than they did then. GET OVER IT. If you can’t make tr.im popular without sponsorship from Twitter, then you don’t deserve to succeed. Do you hear Steve Jobs constantly complaining about Microsoft?
You were “overwhelmed” by the response? 300 comments and a handful of emails overwhelmed you? You have a popular service. When you announce that you will be shutting it down and breaking all your links, how can you not expect an overwhelming response?
A service like tr.im should not cost more than $1000 a month to host. If you need money, don’t pull this shit. Ask for donations. You would have gotten them. But now, you’ll get nothing, because you’ve proven what rotten people you are.

I consider adding someone as a friend an endorsement of their authority, content, and respectability. The only social network I use regularly is Twitter, and my ratio of followers to following is 15 to 1. Most of the people who friend me I do not friend back, and most of the people I follow do not follow me. They may be quite popular and not know me, but I follow them because I enjoy their tweets and endorse their work. It’s not a “me too” thing. You guys who friend everyone ruin the whole friend system for all us legitimate networkers.

http://www.alexshalman.com/2009/08/05/my-twelve-crazy-things-brainstorm-with-me/
I like the one about pretending to work in retail. Because I carry a folder of papers with me and am often writing things down, I get approached in stores for help. I try to find whatever they’re looking for and they never know I’m just a customer.
Here’s some ideas:
Go to the grocery store and start taking pictures of fruit, displays, people shopping. When they tell you to stop, say “make me.” Take a print-out of the laws on taking photographs. Since the store is a public place, they cannot stop you from taking photos; their only recourse is to ban you from the store (in the U.S.). Tell them that.
Take some artistic photos, print them out through a cheap online service, and then write your name and website on the back with a Sharpie. Then start handing them out to everyone you meet. Bonus points if you write an inspirational message on the back.
Go to a realtor and say you are looking for a house in the 1-2 million dollar range. He’ll be happy to show you around, but act unimpressed at the houses you see. Eventually, find one you really like and say you’ll consider it. This works best if you don’t have 1-2 million dollars. If you have 1-2 million dollars, say you’re looking for a house in the 6-10 million dollar range.
Change your desktop background to pure black.
Go out with a girlfriend, meet people, and tell them your life story. Except make up names and stories before talking to each person, and change them every time you meet someone new. If you do this enough, you’ll have people calling you by dozens of different names.
Find an interesting blog post online, and grade it like you’re an English professor. Then post your notes and grade on your blog. Bonus points if you print the blog post, annotate it, scan it, and post it to your blog. Make sure to point out awkward clauses, improper grammar, unverified claims, straw man arguments, and other problems.
When you’re reading your next book, get out a pen and highlighter. Highlight the important stuff, write notes everywhere, cross out superfluous parts of the story. You’ll never be able to resell it, but you’ll remember that book much better than any other book you’ve read.
As for your ideas, I’d give out chocolate instead of flowers. It isn’t awkward. Don’t go to a gay club unless you want people to think you’re gay. Sitting down with strangers at Starbucks isn’t crazy.

Welcome to the world of blogging! I see you already have a website with a news feed. No one can comment on your news items though; a blog will be much more communal. Your biggest problem is going to be integrating your blog with your main website and getting people to visit both. That’s why my whole website is built on WordPress, despite the difficulties.
You’ve picked a nice theme. I will be keeping an eye on your blog; I hope you write some photography tips for me. I see that you are using both Tweet This and Twitter Tools. Amazingly, they have no feature overlap, but next version I intend to steal some of Twitter Tools’ features for Tweet This. Worry not: the features will be opt-in and you will still be able to use both plugins on your blogs.
You also used Twitter Tools’ URL shortening hook with my URL shortener Th8.us. I will add this option to Tweet This later.
I wish you good luck!

http://www.lifehack.org/articles/productivity/a-place-of-ones-works-own.html
This is so true. I once tried writing articles and answering emails with a laptop on the couch. It took my twice as long to get the same amount of work done than sitting upright at a desk, with a full-size computer. It’s a combination of things, really. You have to keep the laptop on your lap, which is annoying. The keyboard is small, there is little to no tactile feedback, and it is easy to make mistakes. You have to use an awful finger pad instead of a mouse. Your seat isn’t hard enough. There’s a t.v. nearby. Sofas just don’t register in my mind as a work environment.
I use a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 with a desktop computer and a big LCD monitor at my desk. I also have a nice laser mouse. There is no substitute. I even read blogs faster. You need a clean space to work.

http://www.twitip.com/why-you-should-start-over-on-twitter-with-a-brand-new-account/
I just did a massive unfollowing, reducing my list from 133 to 12. Darren is one of them, of course. I honestly don’t care if it’s not nice to unfollow everyone like that. Everyone I unfollowed I had a shallow connection to, and almost all of them I followed because they followed me. I never got anything useful out of it.
Creating a new account is stupid. Even if you picked an awful name, just change the name of your current account to keep people following you. You’ve spent a lot of time on your current account; don’t throw it all away. Creating a new account also confuses people, because your real fans have to find you again, follow your new account, and remove your old account. Bad advice all around.
Now I don’t need a Twitter client because I don’t have that many new tweets to sift through. I don’t feel any pressure to follow people back, because they know not to expect it when they see someone who has 172 followers but only 12 himself. I’m more likely to follow people who don’t follow me and to be followed by people who I won’t follow back. It’s a wonderful thing.

http://www.dirjournal.com/articles/how-to-add-a-twitter-button-to-your-blog-all-possible-options/
g1smd is right; those spaces really need to be plus signs. Not that you have to use a plugin, but I see a lot of do-it-yourself people making that mistake. It shouldn’t harm anything, but spaces in URLs is always bad form. This is the version I recommend, as it uses shorter URLs:
<?php
global $id;
echo ‘<a href=”http://twitter.com/home?status=Currently+reading+’ . get_bloginfo(’url’) .
‘/?p=’ . $id . ‘” title=”Post to Twitter”>Tweet This Post</a>’;

http://www.delightfulwork.com/getting-unstuck/beliefs-are-bad-for-business/
I read so many blog posts that don’t explain what a belief is or give an example of one, but go on for two-thousand words about that power and dangers of beliefs, how to harness them, analyze them, etc. But they never answer the question: “What is a belief?” This post is another one of those, unfortunately.

I had a bad MySQL query on the home page of Th8.us which actually crashed my web server recently. I had to fight my webhost WiredTree to get back online, and I removed all the features from Th8.us so it has no hit counters or URL lists… but is lightning fast. Also I released v1.4 of Tweet This today which improves performance. I recommend you upgrade; it’s fine to stick with TinyURL.com instead of Th8.us (TinyURL is more reliable currently but Th8.us should not be going down again).
- Richard X. Thripp at 2009-07-15T14:29:12.
This was purely my fault; my web server crashed due to a bad MySQL query on the home page of Th8.us, and since that is the default URL shortener for Tweet This, everything started timing out. I had a failsafe in place but it didn’t stop the huge lags so it was worthless. I stripped Th8.us of features (no more hit counters or URL lists), so it’s a lot faster now. I also released v1.4 of Tweet This today which improves performance, so hopefully I can repair Tweet This’ marred reputation.

http://wordpress.org/support/topic/278265
A dumb inefficient MySQL query on the http://th8.us home page cooked my server, and since Th8.us is the default URL shortener everything was timing out. I stripped Th8.us of URL lists and hit counters so it’s more like is.gd / TinyURL and less like bit.ly. I also released version 1.4 of the plugin a few minutes ago which improves the speed a lot. Tweet This has been getting more negative than positive feedback because of these glaring issues, but I’m hoping to turn this around now.

http://www.inkygirl.com/why-ive-removed-tweet-this-and-share-this-plugins/
I’m glad to see that ShareThis is experiencing issues too, because the slowness has been a bitch with Tweet This for a while. I just released v1.4 a few minutes ago which is a large improvement. For best results use local short URLs and disable the Tweets about this post lists.

Mr. Burke sent threatening emails and left defamatory feedback on my public eBay page. Receiving his payment 2 weeks late, I promptly shipped his item, yet he left derogatory comments out of spite for me filing an unpaid item dispute about him.
The content of his email:
“Yo shitstain, don’t you think an emai to remind me would have been a little nicer than a dispute?
Asshole”
And the negative feedback:
“THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD BUYING SOMETHING ON THE INTERNET. STAYAWAY!”
Which I responded with:
“Took 2 weeks to pay, complains about unpaid item dispute! I shipped promptly.”
To which he replied:
“DUDE IS A CUMDRINKER THAT THREATENED TO HAVE SEXRELATIONS WITH MY DOG”
The above statement is disgusting and untrue.

http://forum.modrewrite.com/viewtopic.php?p=47823
I’m trying to set up a rewrite rule for virtual subdomains which silently forwards all subdomains to a file called profile.php, except those in a defined list. Here’s my code:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ([^.]+)\.thripp\.com [NC]
RewriteCond %1 !(www|richardxthripp|f|wowgoldeu|poverty|worm3rck|photography|walkingonthesun|jt|richardthripp|melanieburney)
RewriteRule ^(.*) profile.php?u=%1 [L]The list works fine in that domains such as f.thripp.com and poverty.thripp.com don’t go to the profile.php file, but this also means that any subdomains starting with “f” don’t match this rule, including files.thripp.com, f2.thripp.com, etc. I only want f.thripp.com not to be handled by this rule, whereas domains like files.thripp.com should be handled by the above code but are not. How can I correct this?
Thanks,

@Katebb That happens if allow_url_fopen is disabled; try out version 1.3.9 which switches to curl if so, or uses local URLs if both are disabled. You shouldn’t get that error message anymore.

http://dorkage.net/2009/02/new-tweet-this-hack-but-still-no-monkeys/
Adjix is a cool concept. URL shortening services historically have no monetization options, but this one’s good and doesn’t get in the way too much. I added it to Tweet This version 1.3; when you select it in the settinngs a box comes up to enter you partner ID. You can also use the shorter ad.vu domain. I tried it out on my site, but switched back to my trusty Th8.us. I now have 359 URLs listed in my Adjix.com account, though.
I didn’t add support for domain cloaking, so I guess you still have a reason to hack Tweet This. Maybe next version…

Most people don’t hold truly “objective” belief systems; they still have lucky numbers like their birthdays or lottery numbers.
The “If you request proof, you will be shown something inconclusive every time” line struck a chord with me. We see the same thing with religion and space aliens. Christians say signs of God are all around us, while atheists say there are no signs. The signs are the same, but the interpretation different. You have to believe something contradictory to your current reality model to progress.
You can see an object in the sky and assume it’s a plane, but in fact it’s an alien spacecraft. You’d never know. Then if you see aliens for real, everyone dismisses you as a nut. You can even take pictures, but they’ll turn out blurry, further proving your lunacy.
Surely if aliens are so advanced to fly here from lightyears away, they can hide their existence if they choose. Even if they slip up, they can rewrite our minds to set reality straight. So from an objective standpoint, there’s no proving or disproving the existence of benevolent space creatures. - Richard X. Thripp at 2009-01-31T05:34:00.

Tweet This is now 463 lines of code. That means it’s 463 times better, right?
Anyway, the plugin is preferable if you want to use TinyURL or other services because it caches URLs instead of constantly hitting the external server, and it lets you change the text, URL services, and display options without touching your theme.

Not by much, because it only runs when you make or edit a post, to get the shortened URL from an external server, which is then cached. On subsequent page loads, the plugin only inserts a static image + link, which doesn’t take up many resources.

This auction is for five Memorex Blu-Ray Recordable (BD-R) discs, brand new and sealed in separate retail packages with cases as pictured. Write speed is 1X-4X. 4X is 18MB/sec (equiv. of 120X for CD-Rs), and at that speed writing 25GB takes 25 minutes.
With a Blu-Ray drive, you can save up to 25GB of data or video (high definition or standard definition) to this disc. If you use software to put the video in Blu-Ray video format the disc will play on set-top Blu-Ray players, much like DVD-Rs.
This disc is recordable, meaning you can only write to it once because the blue recording laser permanently burns marks into the dye layer of the disc. So if your computer blows up while you’re burning your high-def movie, your $10 disc becomes a coaster. This disc has better archival stability than rewritable Blu-Rays when recorded properly, however.
* Ideal for high definition recording and playback.
* Ideal for Full HD 1080. - Richard X. Thripp at 2009-01-26T00:40:49.

Brand new Rosewill RCX-Z940-LX 92mm Ball CPU Cooling Fan, in the box as pictured. The UPC code has been removed.
Heatsink material: aluminum fins, 3x copper heat pipe and copper block base.
From Newegg.com ($19.99):
“The best choice in value” is the corporate mantra of Rosewill. Rosewill produces quality CPU coolers with best in class performance while keeping to an affordable price point. Designed specifically for AMD Socket 754, 939, 940 and AM2 Athlon and Sempron processors, the RCX-Z940-LX combines multiple features into a package that performs equally as well as higher-priced units but at a fraction of the price.A vertical stack of large dimension aluminum convection fans are supported – and penetrated by – 3 copper heatpipes which rise out of the base. The base itself is copper to maximize thermal transference from the CPU’s heat spreader. The pipes draw the heat up from the base for dispersion by the cooling fins which are cooled by the 92mm ball bearing fan.
Its PWM functionality lets the system’s BIOS monitor the fan’s speed as well as the thermal need of the CPU and adjust the fans speed lower during reduced computing cycles letting the user balance cooling performance with noise level.

This auction is for one Sony Blu-Ray Recordable (BD-R) disc, brand new and sealed as pictured. Write speed is 1X-2X. 2X is 9MB/sec (equiv. of 60X for CD-Rs), and at that speed writing 25GB takes 47 minutes.
So if your computer blows up while you’re burning your high-def movie, your $20 disc becomes a coaster. This disc has better archival stability than rewritable Blu-Rays when recorded properly, however.
“This disc conforms to Blu-Ray Disc Rewritable format Version 1.1. Before using, please confirm compatibility with hardware manufacturer.”
* Ideal for high definition recording and playback.
* Ideal for Full HD 1080.
* Premium storage case included.
* AccuCORE technology: scratch guard, archival reliability, stable writing, temperature durability, UV guard. These are still expensive… One of these discs is $14.26 on Amazon.com. That’s the price of being on the cutting edge, I suppose. Happy bidding!

What’s the project? You said something about its great magnitude and I was waiting in anticipation but all I got was some pontification upon creativity.

In reply to this comment by Elizabeth Halford:
@Elizabeth: You obviously don’t know me… I would tell a painter the same thing! I have the right to judge your photography… I judge these photos to be over-edited… What you do with that judgment is a choice I leave to you.
Notice that this post has 21 comments and only 10 are significant. 4 of those say you’ve over-edited. A lot of people will leave good comments but if they don’t like your work they’ll stay silent… that means most people think you’ve gone too far.
Please try this: open the final version of these photos in Photoshop and check the gamut warning (View > Gamut Warning). Then soft proof to CMYK (View > Proof Setup, View > Proof Colors). Notice that your photographs CANNOT be reproduced accurately in print. That could mean a.) your colors are over-saturated, and/or b.) you’ve chosen color tones that are hard to print. In this case it’s a.) only.
I looked at your blog and your flickr photo stream. Good work, mostly over-edited, not as over-edited as the Doublemint stuff. The new photos of the baby are great, and are not over-edited. Your problem is with over-saturated colors but you also have some highlight clipping in many of your photos, usually in one channel. For example: this portrait. Most of the girl’s skin is clipped in the red channel (R value of 255). That’s bad.
When you add contrast through curves or levels in an RGB colorspace, you have to desaturate afterwards. Use the gamut warning or soft-proof as a tool to tell you where to use the desaturation brush, or do global desaturation under Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation. Note that in Lab colorspace this does not apply. Make sure to edit in 16-bit/channel mode in one of these colorspaces: Adobe RGB, ProPhoto RGB, Lab, Grayscale.
Keep working! You have a lot of potential.
