The first thing I read on a few sites, wasn't sure of it. Killing animals is worse, but they are tortured a lot for the eggs and cheese I eat... That's not right either.

That's what I was saying--why would you shape something like a burger to begin with? Burgers are manufactured and unappealing. My Mom works at the local health food store and they have a big section for tofu products shaped like meat, so that's where I got that.

Wow, awesome. I love the idea of making a big decision like this on a whim. People think the more important a decision is, the longer it should take you to make, but in fact the more important decisions should be the quickest to make.

"Why do vegetarians start eating tofu burgers and imitation crabs and faux sausages? It’s like saying “I’d really prefer to eat animals, but this will have to do. I’m just sticking with vegetarianism because it’s cool and stylish.” Becoming vegetarian just to imitate a typical meat-eaters diet proves nothing."

Because they are a convenient and familiar way of getting protein. I would not prefer to eat animals, quite the opposite, but why avoid something nice because it happens to be shaped like a burger? The decision to consume meat replacements has no relation whatsoever to a persons motives. I eat a lot of quorn and tofu and have been a veggie for nearly 20 years, so a bit past the usual expected staying power for someone trying to be cool and stylish. True vegetarianism isn't about proving anything. It's about preventing animal suffering and saving the planet.

Just wanted to say something about your comments on veganism. You can't call yourself a vegan because you eat animal products, not because you don't support equal rights for animals. I'm a vegan and I agree with your statement "I'd kill 1000 cats to save my sister".

You went into it later that torturing animals is a problem, and the real problem is that almost all animal products you can buy are from tortured animals. Chickens with their beaks cut off (because they go insane from living in wire cages for their entire lives and try to kill the other chickens) and pigs stuck in cages they can barely move in (keep in mind that pigs are smarter than dogs, so imagine trapping your dog in a cage smaller than your bed for its' entire life).

I think the environmental point is important too, but I suppose you're not really interested.

I ate meat and everything else like crazy when I was growing up. I'd easily eat four or five pork chops with an equal serving of buttery mash potatoes with two or three glasses of milk (often homogenized).

I went Vegan overnight on a whim. Sure it presents difficulties at first, but the benefits of sticking to it - of exploring new food and gaining a more intimate relationship with the food I eat - was completely worth it.

If you want some great recipes to try check out Susan's website at www.fatfreevegan.com/ I don't like the idea of a fat free vegan diet (I eat a ton of fat and I'm still small as a rake, haha) but she has some tasty recipes. Also Vive Le Vegan is a great book to check out. The majority of my large meals follow one or two recipes from that book.

I'm not evangelical about this either; it's not going to save your life or solve all your problems (it may help though). But I don't like the idea of eating meat, and it seems less and less appealing now. I went to McDonald's with my Grandma today, and I forgot that everything has meat in it. It's amazing what most people eat, in a bad way unfortunately...

Most of the people who get really angry about it aren't vegetarians for themselves anyway... they're doing it to be cool or something.

I don't want to. I'm afraid. That means I'm going to have to do that eventually.

I'm enjoying soup and salads, and still eating evil sandwiches with maynaisse, egg, and cheese... and tomatoes, onions, and lettuce, of course. Eating animal products doesn't seem so bad to me, but our farming system tortures them quite a bit for that too. I guess I'm afraid of not being able to eat pizza or pasta w/ cheese or other processed foods, but those limits would push me to find more interesting foods anyway.

I am vegetarian. I never liked meat, so I stopped eating it. I'm not an activist about it, nor am I evangelical. But it always amazes me why other people seem to care so much when it happens to come up in conversation. Could somebody who eats meat please explain to me why what I eat or don't eat is any of your business? At all? Please. Otherwise STFU and have another burger. Thanks.

Because I don't eat animals. If you're going to become a vegetarian, talk to people who already are vegetarians. If you're going to quit smoking, talk to people who have already quit smoking. Don't take advice from smokers.

Who told you that? Someone else who eats meat? Your sister? Why would you listen to her?

If you're going to quit smoking, what do you do? Talk to people who are smoking now? Of course not. They'll just convince you it's alright.

Why are you taking advice from meat-eaters? They're the only ones who will tell you that eating meat is necessary. It's not.

Ricky, this is BUBCAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You have to eat meat to stay healthy! You need to expand your eatings by making room for every food group! THAT IS HEALTHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Besides, I want to follow your legacy. (That means if you don't start eating meat again,
I WILL NEED TO BECOME A VEGETARIAN TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) :help: :help: :help:

You have to eat meat to stay healthy! You need to expand your eatings by making room for every food group! THAT IS HEALTHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Besides, I want to follow your legacy. (That means if you don’t start eating meat again,
I WILL NEED TO BECOME A VEGETARIAN TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Thanks! I haven't eaten any animals in seven weeks, no plans to ever again. I feel better, and I don't have to worry about heart disease or high cholesterol now. I've also been pushed to eat more grains, vegetables, fruits, and other healthy foods, because just about everything else at the supermarket has meat in it. We're so attached to it, it seems.

But you don't have to be! Even if you don't go vegetarian, just eat more healthful food now.

Make sure you have some dark green leaves too; don't just stick with bright lettuce.

I mentioned it above: don't go to the gym to build muscle. Do some meaningful work. Rake the lawn, mow grass, lift boxes that need to be lifted, get a job. It isn't natural to go to the gym, it costs money for some reason, and it contributes nothing to the world.
