I was happy with my latest 4000 and 1000 word articles. But I didn't mention the word count in the article or on Twitter like I normally would. This week, I started reading every post out loud before publishing it. It's so much better than just proof-reading. Almost as good as having a second person read it.

Yeah I still do it. This post passed that test. Some people have shorter attention spans than me or do not enjoy thorough articles. I can't cater to everyone. I think all of the paragraphs are worthwhile here.

My test is if I can read it over three times after writing it without getting bored, it’s not too long or repetitive. I got about halfway through before going into skim mode, then jumping to the last paragraph. My favorite piece of writing advice comes from Elmore Leonard: "I leave out the parts people skip." You can put as much as you want into your first draft, but if the second draft isn't noticeably shorter you're probably doing it wrong. Boil it down to it's essence, it's demi glasse, and it will be much better.

This isn’t a bad post, but it is definitely too long.
