I believe many people never stop to think just how much of their own personal information they are giving away. Plus, the average user I doubt realizes how many services are run by a company like Google. They certainly have the widest range of services, but other companies like Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter all essentially "own" the data you willingly provide them.It is mind boggling when you stop and think about how much information you are really giving up. It is a scary thought really.

I have always been leery of the amount of information we willingly give up to massive data aggregators like Google. To do that you need money... so solicit for donations or put up AdSense ads.I'm on Facebook now and am enjoying it. Most people I know are there. That's very compelling. There's a lot to be said for buying into a community, and you'll connect with a bunch of interesting people who don't go out on their own normally. I'm no longer discounting that.

If you’re building a service like a website (i.e. a URL shortening service), you need to keep it working if people are going to count on you. People often ask how we can make money off the backs of free labor, to which I always answer: we don’t. But the question lingers, and for good reason. Being a community-centric company is a double-edged sword. After all, if you’ve successful in convincing a fair number of community members to buy into your vision, what, if anything, is your responsibility to them? Ultimately, my opinion rests on the assumption that Game fair is a rather different example from most Open Source community sites, because in those cases, the company gives the community items of great value, whether it’s the software, better documentation, or simply the investment into care and feeding of the community.

In the Open Source world, we deal with this all the time. A while back, I even reserved my names on all the social networking sites I could find. That doesn't mean you should put too much time into those sites. At least 80% of your time should be directed at improving your own site. For me, that means answering comments and feedback, editing, posting, and writing about photos, and writing new articles as good ideas strike me.Get your own site; it's not too hard! Before I was ready to start my site, I just set up a free site with Microsoft Office Live Basics, with links to my other sites (I was posting photos to deviantART at the time). It's free (you have to give them credit card info), and they pay for the domain. Features are non-existent, but it's good just to get started as you can start telling everyone your site is yourname.com, and then when you make that site your primary focus, everyone will still be going to the right place.

Sure, you can do that.
